The Challenge
Most mentorship events leave the most important variable — who sits with whom — entirely to chance. You walk in, pick a seat, make small talk, and hope something useful comes out of it. The composition of a table is the product of a mentorship event, but most tools treat participants as interchangeable.
The Solution
A system designed around one principle: every table should contain a mix of thinking styles.
Participants answer a short survey that surfaces preferences — how they approach unfamiliar problems, what frustrates them in a team, what they emphasize when giving advice. From those responses, the system identifies each person's dominant thinking style and assigns them to tables that maximize diversity.
Six Thinking Styles
- Builders — learn by doing, iterating, shipping
- Architects — want the big picture, the system, the plan
- Connectors — think through relationships
- Mavericks — challenge everything
- Stewards — move carefully, value integrity
- Pragmatists — just want to know what works
Structured Rotation
Timed rounds (typically fifteen minutes) keep energy up and expose participants to multiple perspectives. The rotation map redistributes thinking styles to different tables each round, maintaining the diversity guarantee across the entire event — not just the first round.
Room Display
A shared screen shows the round timer, current table assignments, and conversation starters — creating shared context so nobody's checking their phone to figure out what's happening next.
Results
- Conversations with built-in productive tension across thinking styles
- Multiple diverse interactions per event through structured rotation
- Higher quality mentorship exchanges compared to random seating
